The New ISO 45001:2018 Standard: Risk based thinking – Prevent accidents – Provide safe and healthy workplace at construction sites.

Under the Construction Industry Transformation Programme (2016 to 2020), CIDB aims to cutting worksite fatalities to 5.5 per 100,000 workers in 2020 from 10.94 per 100,000 workers in 2015. CIDB promotes to contractors the use of occupational safety and health management system in their construction projects.

Importance of Occupational Safety and Health Management in Construction

Failure to protect construction personnel and workers from major injury and fatal accident, many people are hurt or killed at construction sites each year. Now, with the arrival of the world’s first International Standard on occupational safety and health, many such accidents can be prevented.

The ISO 45001 occupational safety and health management system prescribes best practice requirements to improve worker safety and health as well as enhance organization’s OSH performance. The ISO 45001 has the potential to be a real game changer in preventing workplace injury and ill health for those who are working at construction sites.

The ISO 45001 Standard

The ISO 45001 standard was published on 12 March 2018. The standard has been developed by experts from 69 countries in liaison with representatives from key organizations such as the Inter-national Labour Organization (ILO), International Trades Union Confederation (ITUC) and Inter¬national Organisation of Employers (IOE).

ISO 45001 is the first global occupational safety and health management system standard. It combines the OHSAS 18001 and other standards already used around the world with the common ISO framework of popular standards such as ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 14001 (environmental management), making it simpler for users to integrate their management systems into the company’s overall business management and business strategy to improve efficiencies and effectiveness.

ISO 45001 will also ensure that companies recognize and embrace the importance of worker involvement and worker consultation in improving working conditions through better engagement of the workforce.

The standard has gone a step further, even less prescriptive and more focusing on safety and health performance. This is achieved by combining the process approach with risk-based thinking, employing the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle at all levels in the organization and takes into account of regulatory requirements.
